Congratulations to the newest National Park in America: New River Gorge National Park. There are four visitor centers in this 70,000 acre park. Rock climbers, hikers, fishermen, white water rafters and bikers flock to this beautiful area to play. The 3,030 foot long New River Gorge Bridge claims it’s status as “Western Hemisphere’s Longest Arch Bridge.” Historic Thurmond includes abandoned but restored buildings including a post office, bank and the old Train Depot has been converted to a visitor center. Coal is still transported through the town by rail. If you have a day or a week, there is plenty to keep you busy in this lovely park.
