Well, you need a boat to explore 95% of Biscayne National Park. On land the warm ocean breeze, walking the .08 mile Convoy Point Jetty Trail with lapping waters along the shoreline, a distant view of Miami across the bay, smelling unusual flowers, watching the fishermen and a visit to the Dante Fascell Visitor Center provided us with a snapshot of this incredible place. My second visit was by charter. The crystal clear blue-green waters set the background as we sailed through colonies of blue heron, white ibises and snowy egret while pelicans and gulls soared above our boat. We took an hour to explore Boca Chita (very interesting history) and then sailed past Elliott Key with dolphins dancing above the waves. Beautiful! I am ever in awe of conservationists extraordinary efforts to keep at least a part of this country pristine. Biscayne National Park exemplifies the battle between developers and passionate individuals who believe that our children should have places to truly experience the wonders of nature.(The underwater photograph is from a photo at the Visitor Center.)
BISCAYNE
Category: Southeast Region
State: Florida

Date Created: June 28, 1980.
Last Visited by Susan: July 2023; Januray 2026
Location: Southern Florida, USA, covering a large portion of Biscayne Bay and the northernmost Florida Keys.
Size: Approximately 172,971 acres (70,043 hectares).
In most parks land dominates the picture. But Biscayne is not like most parks. Here water and sky overwhelm the scene in every direction, leaving the bits of low-lying land looking remote and insignificant.
