Location: West-central Kentucky, USA.
Size: Approximately 52,830 acres (21,416 hectares).
Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system in the world. Five thousand years of human history with a mapped area 420 miles long and still I saw spelunkers with head lamps and muddy boots continuing to explore deeper into the unknown. I took two ranger-led tours. The Historic Tour is a passage through an ancient underground waterway showcasing the remnants of past mining operations, Bottomless Pit, Fat Man’s Misery and 192 foot-high Mammoth Dome. You climb stairs, duck, squeeze, turn sideways, bend and tiptoe along the well trodden path. The Domes and Drips Tour entrance is through a sinkhole opening. Fascinating stalagmites, stalactites, columns, draperies, cave “bacon” and popcorn formations are featured along deep canyon walls and high-roof sculpted corridors. Above ground there are 70 miles of hiking trails, camping sites, biking, birdwatching, boating, fishing and horseback riding opportunities. Note: graffiti, once acceptable behavior is now a Federal offense (and ugly). Really important: schedule tours ahead of your visit.
